What is management?
One of the pioneers in the management field, F.W. Taylor, once quipped that “management is the art of knowing what to do and seeing that it is done in the best possible manner”.
The study of business management covers all aspects of the business, and the decisions that need to be made in each area and at each level to ensure that the business succeeds.
Essentially, there are four key functions of business management: planning (which involves deciding on business goals and how to achieve them), organizing (allocating people and resources to achieve these goals), leading (supervising or motivating employees) and controlling (analyzing business activities to ensure goals are being achieved). Students of business management will study each function in the management process from deciding what needs to be done, right through to ensuring that it has been done correctly.
A good business manager will use their skills to steer an organisation in the right direction, working with the company’s strengths, identifying new opportunities and managing threats that arise along the way.
