The thought of starting university can be overwhelming for anyone. Questions like where to study, what to study and what will come out of your qualification, often arise. There is no such thing as “too much information” when deciding which degree is best suited for you and shapes your future.
During and after finishing Matric, the norm is to research a great university or an institution that has an excellent academic track record and offers an unforgettable student experience. At the end of it all, you have the satisfaction of finally graduating and flipping your graduation cap, to welcome the next chapter of your life – the world of work.
Universities host Information Sessions and Open Days on campus, inviting prospective students for a short presentation by a student advisor or an academic expert on the institution’s offerings, admission requirements and more. It is the easiest way for a prospective student to gather more information and make sure the programme you are considering is a good fit for your future career.
The magic lies in asking questions. Yes, you can go online and read about programmes and facts about the industry that interests you. However, nothing compares to being able to speak to an expert in person. Questions specific to certain situations, whether related to financial issues, credits from previous educational institutions. These topics are most efficiently dealt with in person, as opposed to back and forth via email.
Before you meet with a student advisor or an academic expert, consider the following tips:
- Do a little bit of research before you attend the sessions or Open Day and have some questions prepared so you can leave feeling like you got most out of your visit.
- Apply, apply, apply. Ensure that you do not miss the application and registration deadlines as most universities fill up fast.
