Going to university is a dream for many high school students, but with more tertiary education choice available than ever before, selecting a course and a university is not always as easy as it might first seem.

Executive Director of Quality, Teaching and Learning at Monash South Africa, Nicolene Murdoch, believes early preparation is the best way for students to determine which higher education option suits them best.

“Students and parents need to research about what is available and what careers entail,” Ms Murdoch said.

“There is a huge amount of information about study modes, study areas, course options and the differences between universities online, but what the internet can’t offer is a first-hand taste of an institution’s atmosphere and environment.”

This is one of the reasons why open days remain one of the most important events on the calendars of universities the world over. Monash is no exception. The Monash South Africa Open Day, taking place tomorrow, is the best opportunity for students and parents to explore the campus, discover the many study options and get a real feel for what life at Monash is like.

Students can take a campus tour, find out about uni life from current students and graduates, meet with academics and have one-on-one consultations to discuss course offerings and the careers they might lead to. Presentations about the Monash Abroad programme will be held every hour.

“Open Day is also a chance to find out more about the Monash South Africa Foundation Programme, a one-year pathway course helping students whose scores do not meet the requirements for direct entry into an undergraduate degree,” Ms Murdoch said.

This year, for the first time, the University is hosting Monash Brilliant Talks on Open Day. The talks will bring together top executives from some of South Africa’s most highly-regarded organisations to speak with prospective students – and current undergraduates – about the opportunities that await graduates in the corporate world.
