IMPACT OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Volunteering and giving back to the community is a big part of life on campus. Our students and academics use the skills they acquire during their time at IIE MSA to bring real change to people’s lives.

A commitment to increasing access to education for young children in marginalised communities in South Africa has earned Lebo Sekhotla – a Psychology and Management student – global recognition for her work. Lebo was awarded the “Here for Good” award, which recognises the social impact of students from across the Laureate International Universities network. She is the first South African student to secure this recognition.

Lebo developed a motivational programme called “Tomorrow Starts Today” for learners from nearby communities, designed to give these learners the life skills, confidence, and career guidance they need to stay in school, apply to university, and contribute to their communities.

Student Society CRIMON hosts an annual event helping to raise awareness of modern day slavery and human trafficking. The ‘Sweatshop Challenge’ is an immersive simulation experience, leaving attendees with a sense of heightened understanding and sympathy for the victims of modern slavery and human trafficking.

Impact of Community Engagement

The IIE MSA LEAD Programme was launched in 2016 in partnership with Laureate International Universities and the International Youth Foundation (IYF). This fellowship programme for young social entrepreneurs between the ages of 16-29 from across South Africa annually recognises 10 youth-led projects that are positively impacting their communities.

“Volunteering develops leadership and active citizens; our strongest campus leaders are often those who volunteer in social change projects. Many of our students also choose career paths that work to tackle critical issues in Africa, such as education, health and HIV/Aids, environmental issues and civic engagement.” – Bronwyn Dugtig, Head of Community Engagement
